This is the actual execution of Amon Goeth. He was famously depicted in the movie Schindler’s List, as firing on concentration camp prisoners with a sniper rifle from his balcony.


Amon Leopold Göth (German: [ˈɡøːt] (listen); alternative spelling Goeth; 11 December 1908 – 13 September 1946) was an Austrian SS functionary and war criminal.

He served as the commandant of the Kraków-Płaszów concentration camp in Płaszów in German-occupied Poland for most of the camp's existence during World War II.

Göth was tried after the war by the Supreme National Tribunal of Poland at Kraków and was found guilty of personally ordering the imprisonment, torture, and extermination of individuals and groups of people.

He was also convicted of homicide, the first such conviction at a war crimes trial, for "personally killing, maiming and torturing a substantial, albeit unidentified number of people."

Göth was executed by hanging not far from the former site of the Płaszów camp. The 1993 film Schindler's List, in which Göth is portrayed by Ralph Fiennes, depicts his running of the Płaszów concentration camp.

Trial and execution

After the war, Göth was extradited to Poland, where he was tried by the Supreme National Tribunal of Poland in Kraków between 27 August and 5 September 1946.

Göth was found guilty of membership in the Nazi Party (which had been declared a criminal organisation) and personally ordering the imprisonment, torture, and extermination of individuals and groups of people.

He was also convicted of homicide, the first such conviction at a war crimes trial, for "personally killing, maiming and torturing a substantial, albeit unidentified number of people." He was sentenced to death and was hanged on 13 September 1946 at the Montelupich Prison in Kraków, not far from the site of the Płaszów camp.

His remains were cremated and the ashes thrown in the Vistula River.

Suzanne Hochherr was born in Amsterdam on September 1, 1939—the very same day Nazi Germany invaded Poland, beginning World War II. In May 1940, the Netherlands would also be occupied by the German army.  Suzanne's parents, Margot and Heinz, had moved to the Netherlands from Nazi Germany in hopes of safety. But in the summer of July 1942, German authorities and their Dutch collaborators began to round up and deport Jews from throughout the Netherlands.  Jews were often first taken to the Westerbork transit camp. Most were only there for a short time. From Westerbork, men, women, and children were deported to killing centers, ghettos, and camps—mainly Auschwitz-Birkenau and Sobibor. In 1879, the prolonged firing-squad execution of murderer Wallace Wilkerson in Utah made news. Wilkerson was an American stockman who was sentenced to death for the murder of William Baxter. He professed his innocence until his dying day, and chose his fate by firing squad over hanging or decapitation.   When the day came, Wilkerson was seated on a chair at a corner of the jail yard about 30 feet away from the shooters and declined to be blindfolded or restrained. John Lee - "The man they could not hang". One of hangman James Berry’s most famous (non) jobs was the strange case of John Lee at 8.00 a.m. on Monday the 23rd of February 1885 at Exeter prison. All the normal preparations were made on the gallows, set up in the coach house, but when Berry operated the lever, nothing happened.  Berry and the two warders holding Lee, stamped on the trap doors but to no avail, and Lee was then taken back to his cell whilst the release mechanism was tested. It worked perfectly.  The process was now repeated but with the same result and yet again the trap worked perfectly after Lee was removed. ‘Be prepared for the worst to happen any day’ ANZAC Lieutenant Bert Crowle penned these sober words in a letter to his wife, Beatrice, from his bed in late August 1916. Days earlier, Bert had shepherded his ‘shaken’ men into no-man’s-land in a futile attack upon Mouquet Farm on the Somme.  Two machine-gun bullets had struck Bert in the thigh, with a third ricocheting off the periscope in his pocket.  Bert survived the wound.  Stretcher-bearers walked four miles across open ground to get him back to a casualty clearing station.  The station formed part of an intricate network of aid posts, dressing stations, and hospitals (pictured) that would treat over two million of the empire’s wounded in the Great War.  After three days of treatment, Bert realised things weren’t good. ‘Had I been brought in at once I had a hope,’ he told Beatrice.  The Somme soil, laced with manure, had infected the wound.
