The Prehistoric Snuggle. 250 million years ago, an injured amphibian known as Broomistega tried to find shelter from Earth’s most severe extinction event known as the Great Dying. During this time, large amounts of carbon dioxide were emitted by volcanic eruptions, which led to an increase in global temperatures and the acidification of the oceans. 70% of life on the supercontinent of Pangea went extinct. Nearly all marine life was wiped out. The Broomistega managed to crawl down a small warm burrow that was occupied by a dormant Thrinaxodon, a direct ancestor of mammals that was roughly the size of a fox.  Although researchers did find two possible puncture marks on the Broomistega, they did not match the dental configuration of the Thrinaxodon. The Broomistega was suffering from broken ribs, but it showed signs of healing, which indicated that its injury was not caused by a struggle between the two Triassic creatures. Researchers also ruled out the idea that the Broomistega was washe

A friendly U.S. Marine gives a little Japanese boy a ride on his shoulders, only a few days after Saipan was secured in June 1944. While the battle officially ended on July 9, Japanese resistance still persisted with Captain Sake Oba and 46 other soldiers who survived with him during the last banzai charge. After the battle, Oba and his soldiers led many Japanese civilians throughout the jungle of the island to escape capture by the Americans, while also conducting guerrilla-style attacks on pursuing forces. The Americans tried numerous times to hunt them down but failed due to their speed and stealth. In September 1944, the Marines began conducting patrols in the island's interior, searching for survivors who were raiding their camp for supplies. Although some of the soldiers wanted to fight, Captain Oba asserted that their primary concerns were to protect the civilians and to stay alive to continue the war. At one point, the Japanese soldiers and civilians were almost captured by

On this day in 1944, during the Pacific Campaign of World War II, members of the U.S. Marine Corps stormed the beaches of the strategically significant Japanese island of Saipan, with a goal of gaining a crucial air base from which the U.S. could launch its new long-range B-29 bombers directly at Japan’s home islands.  Facing fierce Japanese resistance, Americans poured from their landing crafts to establish a beachhead, battle Japanese soldiers inland and force the Japanese army to retreat north. Fighting became especially brutal and prolonged around Mount Tapotchau, Saipan’s highest peak, and Marines gave battle sites in the area names such as “Death Valley” and “Purple Heart Ridge.”  When the U.S. finally trapped the Japanese in the northern part of the island, Japanese soldiers launched a massive but futile banzai charge. On July 9, the U.S. flag was raised in victory over Saipan. The brutal three-week Battle of Saipan resulted in more than 3,000 U.S. deaths and over 13,000 wounded

Walter Horsford - “The St. Neots poisoning case”. On Wednesday the 1st of June 1898, 26 year old farmer, Walter Horsford, stood trial before Mr. Justice Hawkins at Huntingdon Assizes, charged with the murder by poisoning of his cousin, Mrs. Annie Holmes.  He pleaded not guilty, the proceedings lasting six days The prosecution, led by Mr. Rawlinson, Q.C., stated that Annie lived at Stoneleigh near Kimbolton in Huntingdonshire.  She was a widow and had three children, the youngest still a baby.  It was alleged that Horsford had been “intimate” with Annie.  In October of 1897, Horsford had married a woman named Bessie.  At the end of that month Annie moved to a cottage on East Street in St. Neots.  By December Annie told Horsford that she was pregnant by him.  He wrote her a letter which said, “Dear Annie, Will come over on Friday to see if we can come to an arrangement of some sort or other, but you must remember that I paid you for what I had done.  I gave you half a crown and so if I t

"2010 San Fernando Massacre"

Image
"2010 San Fernando Massacre" The 2010 San Fernando massacre, also known as the first massacre of San Fernando, was the mass murder of 72 undocumented immigrants by Los Zetas drug cartel in the village of El Huizachal in the municipality of San Fernando, Tamaulipas, Mexico.  The 72 killed—58 men and 14 women—were mainly from Central and South America, and they were shot in the back of the head and then piled up together. The bodies were found inside a ranch on 24 August 2010 by the Mexican military after they engaged in an armed confrontation with members of a drug cartel. They received information of the place after an Ecuadorian survived a shot to the neck and face, faked his death, and then made his way out of the ranch and up to a military checkout to ask for help.  There were only three survivors. Investigators later mentioned that the massacre was a result of the immigrants' refusal to work for Los Zetas, or to provide money for their release. On 17 June 2011 the Fed

Strange history Headless Mike

Image
Strange history Headless Mike, also known as Wonder Mike (April 1945 – March 1947), was a Viandot rooster known for living 18 months after his head was almost completely severed. Mike's been exposed to the public for a fee of 25 cents. At the peak of his popularity, the chicken brought the owners $4,500 a month ($48,000 in 2010 prices) and was valued at $10,000. Next to Mike, a pickled chicken head was often displayed behind his head, but in fact his head was eaten by a cat. Olsen's success led to a wave of beheading chickens in the hope of repeating this, but no other headless chickens survived more than a day or two. It was found that the ax did not hit the carotid artery, so Mike did not die of bleeding. Although part of his head was severed, most of his brain stem and one ear remained on his body.  Since the main functions (breathing, pulse, etc.), as well as most reflex actions are controlled by the brain stem, Mike remained alive. This case is a good example of many nervo

Strange history Such an unofficial title received among archaeologists a strange burial, relating to the end of the X - beginning of the XI century.  It was discovered in 1994 near the Czech town of Chelakovica. In eleven pits, the remains of 13 people were laid, bound by leather belts and with aspen rings stuck in the heart.  Some of the dead also had their hands and heads cut off. According to pagan beliefs and rituals, it was done to vampires, rising at night from their graves and drinking human blood.  Studies have shown that buried bones belong to local residents - exclusively to men of about the same age. What happened in this area? The mass insanity of the inhabitants of the village of Chelakovica, which led to the tragedy, or some of its inhabitants were victims of an epidemic that led to "vampirism"?  Historical chronicles have not kept these events for us. The mystery of the Chelakovitsky cemetery of vampires remains unsolved.

Unsolved mysterious dead of full family

Image
Strange history on April 4, 1922, a group of local residents went to Hinterkaifek to understand why family members do not go to school and church.  To their surprise, they found Gruber, his wife, their 35-year-old daughter, two grandchildren and a maid – all of them were killed by a hoe. This was particularly surprising, because the family was dead for three days, and all cows were recently fed, food freshly prepared and neighbors saw smoke from the pipe. In other words, someone lived on a farm after they killed a family. A few days before the unfortunate incident, Grubber told his neighbors that he had found strange footprints leading from the forest to his farm. Family members also complained of strange noises in the attic and missing a set of keys to the house. Moreover, the maid abruptly quit her job at the farm six months ago. The new maid was hired hours before the mass murder. Investigators were able to determine that the killer was methodically pursuing the family, lured the ol

strange history In medieval Europe lived a young girl named Eliza Day

strange history In medieval Europe lived a young girl named Eliza Day, whose beauty was like wild roses, growing by the river - blood and red. One day a young man came to the city, instantly fell in love with Eliza.  They've met for three days. He came to her house the first day. On the second day he brought her one red rose and asked her to meet where wild roses grow.  On the third day he took her to the river, where he killed her. A terrible man waited for her to turn away from him, then took the stone and, whispering "All beauty must die", killed her with one blow to the head.  He put a rose in her teeth and pushed the body into the river. Some people claim to have seen her ghost wandering across the river, with one rose in his hand, and blood flows from her head.

Why did the Nazis use gas chambers instead of just shooting or beheading the Jews, blacks, and homosexuals?

Image
Why did the Nazis use gas chambers instead of just shooting or beheading the Jews, blacks, and homosexuals? Because the Nazis noticed that if soldiers shot men, women and children every day, they would break down psychologically and become alcoholics. Forget the movies, in the two world wars the soldiers fought too far away to know if they had shot someone let alone knowing that they had killed him, in addition the shootings as a death sentence were not so frequent and in any case one of the rifles was loaded with blanks, therefore no one could know if it was he who had killed the convict. The Nazis originally shot prisoners from the killing fields, but no matter how much indoctrination you can do, nobody wants to spend their days shooting unarmed people, the psyche breaks down, so the Nazis figured out a way to kill people without the executioner sees those people die, since he doesn't deal with burning corpses and so the soldiers managed to do their extermination without t

Sharpeville massacre South African history [1960] Sharpeville massacre , (March 21, 1960), incident in the Black township of Sharpeville, near Vereeniging, South Africa, in which police fired on a crowd of Black people, killing or wounding some 250 of them. It was one of the first and most violent demonstrations against apartheid in South Africa. The Pan-Africanist Congress (PAC), a splinter group of the African National Congress (ANC) created in 1959, organized a countrywide demonstration for March 21, 1960, for the abolition of South Africa’s pass laws. Participants were instructed to surrender their reference books (passes) and invite arrest. Some 20,000 Blacks gathered near a police station at Sharpeville, located about 30 miles (50 km) south of Johannesburg. After some demonstrators, according to police, began stoning police officers and their armoured cars, the officers opened fire on them with submachine guns. About 69 Blacks were killed and more than 180 wounded, some 50 wo

Lee, it appeared to average Americans – both north and south – that Wirz was the only person tried, convicted, or executed after the war. This assumption as frequently been cited as "proof" that the government was out for vengeance against Wirz alone. While the trial of Henry Wirz was by far the most famous of the military tribunals at the end of the Civil War, it was not the only one. In fact, there were nearly 1,000 military tribunals in which Confederates

The Armenian Genocide (1915- believed to have continued into 1920)

The Armenian Genocide (1915- believed to have continued into 1920) Claiming that the Armenian populace was collaborating with Russian forces during World War I, the Ottoman Empire/ later the Turks, deported the largely Christian Armenians south of the empire. Any genocide is an atrocity that should incite horror, sadness and empathy in any human heart.  What makes the Armenian Genocide so much is worse is learning that both the German, and Austro-Hungarian Empires were well aware of the culling taking place, but chose to turn a blind eye to ensure Ottoman forces would keep the British tied up in the Middle East and Russian forces busy to the East.   Even after the guns fell silent on November 11th 1918, the killings continued for a few more years and still bear scars on the descendants of the survivors. They were subjected to mass executions and death marches across the Syrian Desert. Experts believe that up to an estimated 1.5 million Armenians were killed during the genocide. Coloriz

VILLISCA AXE MURDER HOUSE, VILLISCA IOWA, UNITED STATES {TRIGGER WARNING!! THIS POST CONTAINS SENSITIVE SUBJECTS} The Villisca axe murders took place on the night of June 9th, 1912 and are known to be one of the most gruesome murders to occur.  This case remains unsolved today. The morning of June 10th the Moore family and two guest were found bludgeoned to death in the residence. All eight victims including 6 children had severe head wounds from an axe. All the entrances were secure, and no one had gone in or out. Two cigarette butts int the attic suggested that the killer waited in the attic until the family was asleep.  The killer(s) began in the master bedroom, where Josiah and Sarah Moore were sleeping. Josiah received more blows from the axe than any other victim; his face had been cut to such an extent that his eyes were missing. The ceiling in his room also had a gouge mark from when the murderer lifted the axe to murder him. They used the blade part on Josiah and the blunt end

This painting of a young woman breastfeeding an old man in a prison cell was sold for Euros 30 million

Image
This painting of a young woman breastfeeding an old man in a prison cell was sold for Euros 30 million. The painting may look perverse but the story behind is from historical records. The poor man was sentenced to "death by starvation" for stealing a loaf of bread during the reign of Louis XIV in France. The woman was his only daughter and the only visitor to his cell. She was allowed to visit him daily but was frisked thoroughly such that no food was taken in. When after 4 months the man still survived with no weight loss, the authorities were perplexed and started spying on her in the cell and to their utter astonishment found her to breastfeed her father to the fullest sharing her baby's milk. The judges then realizing the compassion and love of the woman for her father, pardoned the father and set him free. This piece of history brings into focus how deep is a woman's compassion in our daily lives that men often tend to overlook.

female behavior could be deemed as an indicator of hysteria

Image
In the 1913 study, The Sexual Impulse in Women, it was reported that about 75% of women suffered from "hysteria," a condition with symptoms ranging from headaches to epileptic fits to verbal outbursts. It was essentially akin to epilepsy. Any female behavior could be deemed as an indicator of hysteria, and the primary treatment was pelvic massage: clitoral stimulation was a palliative cure for this condition. Who was supposed to handle this? The doctors, who apparently found no pleasure in doing so! For Victorian women, clitoral stimulation was not even considered a sexual act, as it was believed that they were incapable of experiencing sexual desire. If a woman moaned during a pelvic massage, she was said to be having a "hysterical paroxysm." After reaching this state, patients would temporarily ease their issues. The invention of the steam-powered vibrator came as a savior for these specialist doctors, relieving them from the hand-cramping work.

Belgian soldier posing for a photograph in Italian Farina body-armour, 1917. Today I'll write about the Italian Farina body-armour used during the First World War. On May 23, 1915, Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary, and a bloody front along the Isonzo river ensued. The front soon bogged down into positional trench warfare, with layers of barbed wire protecting the trenches, which the Italians soon realized caused immense problems for their attacking soldiers. On June 16, 1915, the Italians formed the so-called "Companies of Death" (Compagnie della Morte), whose arduous task would be to cut the barbed wire with wire cutters and to conquer the enemy trenches before the masses of infantry would attack. As can be imagined given their name and task, the Companies of Death suffered heavy losses in their efforts, with many sacrificing themselves on the barbed wire for their fellow soldiers not to share the same fate. To offer the Companies of Death more protection, the Farin

Are Southerners Still Welcome in Our Military?

Are Southerners Still Welcome in Our Military? The Sons of Confederate Veterans oppose the recently recommended actions by the Naming Commission in conjunction with the Department of Defense. Their actions to strip the names of Confederate officers and heroes from our military assets will raise serious doubts as to whether young Southerners are welcome in today’s military.  A vocal and ambivalent minority has embarked on a vicious attack against American history. They have fought long and hard, have lobbied those in power, and have championed the cause to change the names of military bases, naval vessels, and historic flags. In other words, all things connected with Southern valor displayed on the field of battle during the War Between the States are to be purged.  This action is a rejection of the same vigor that inspired many Southerners to join the military and heroically defended the United States, many in her time of need, and in communion with the valor displayed by their Confede

LANGUAGE, UNIVERSAL

Image
LANGUAGE, UNIVERSAL The invention of a universal language, which men of all nations could understand and through which they could communicate their thoughts, has always been one of the dreams of certain philologists.  In the seventeenth century, Dalgarno had written his Ars Signorum to prove the possibility of a universal character and a philosophical language. About the same time Bishop Wilkins published his Essay towards a Real Character and a Philosophical Language; and even the mathematical Leibnitz entertained the project of a universal language for all the world.  It is not, therefore, surprising, that when the so-called Leland Manuscript stated that the Freemasons concealed a "Universal Language," John Locke, or whoever was the commentator on that document, should have been attracted by the statement. He says: A universal language has been much desired by the learned of many ages. It is a thing rather to be wished than hoped for. But it seems the Masons pretend to have
