The Prehistoric Snuggle. 250 million years ago, an injured amphibian known as Broomistega tried to find shelter from Earth’s most severe extinction event known as the Great Dying.

During this time, large amounts of carbon dioxide were emitted by volcanic eruptions, which led to an increase in global temperatures and the acidification of the oceans. 70% of life on the supercontinent of Pangea went extinct. Nearly all marine life was wiped out.

The Broomistega managed to crawl down a small warm burrow that was occupied by a dormant Thrinaxodon, a direct ancestor of mammals that was roughly the size of a fox. 

Although researchers did find two possible puncture marks on the Broomistega, they did not match the dental configuration of the Thrinaxodon. The Broomistega was suffering from broken ribs, but it showed signs of healing, which indicated that its injury was not caused by a struggle between the two Triassic creatures.

Researchers also ruled out the idea that the Broomistega was washed into the lair due to the narrow passageways of the burrow. Their peaceful cohabitation came to an end when a muddy flood buried them in the burrow while they dozed off together.

Alexander Pearce was a native of County Monaghan, Ireland, born in 1790.  He was transported to Australia in 1819 for stealing shoes and continued to prove troublesome in Van Diemen’s Land. Pearce absconded with several others in May 1822, and became a bushranger. This was short lived and Pearce was captured with one of his mates, and was duly sent to Macquarie Harbour. At Macquarie Harbour, Pearce joined a gang of convicts led by the pirates Greenhill and Travers, who intended on escaping from their prison on Sarah Island. The escape was haphazard, and the escapees decided to take their chances going through the forest. The men soon found themselves lost and starving. The decision was made to turn to cannibalism. The men either separated from the group or died one by one and were eaten by the survivors, until only Pearce and Greenhill remained. Tea is hot, strong and scolds as I try and get ready.  Quick dry shave, quick wash- no warm water yet. Quickly dressing into uniform, Irvin jacket,  I pick up gloves, stuff feet into boots, I finish slurping my tea as I walk to get breakfast. "Morning Adams, says Parky, my Flight Leader. THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN-July 10th 1940, just 83 Years ago- On This Day in the Battle of Britain:JULY 10th 1940- The heavy clouds of the dawn along with the driving rain made most of the pilots turn over and take advantage of a 'lie-in'. In these conditions, the Germans made the most of the cloud cover and made photographic reconnaissance flights over possible and probable targets, but the Dornier 17s that usually made these flights often suffered heavy losses.
