Today 109 years ago, on June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was assassinated in the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo by Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip, leading directly to the outbreak of the First World War.

In June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife decided on a visit to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina, for the opening of a state museum and for the couple's 14th wedding anniversary. Bosnia-Herzegovina had been formally annexed into the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1908.

The Bosnian revolutionary movement 'Young Bosnia' and the secret Serbian military organization the 'Black Hand' sought Bosnian independence in order to unify with Serbia in the formation of a Yugoslavia.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand was in favour of a triple empire between Austria, Hungary and the Slavic nations. Fearing his desired reforms, and in order to 'revive the revolutionary spirit of Bosnia', the Black Hand planned to assassinate the Archduke in Sarajevo by members of Young Bosnia with weapons supplied by the Serbian military. 5 of the 6 assassins chosen were Serbs, one of them 19-year-old Gavrilo Princip.

On the morning of June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife arrived in Sarajevo. At 10 AM they began their drive through the city.

At 10:10 AM the car approached one of the Serbian assassins, who threw a bomb at the car. The bomb missed the Archduke's car, instead exploding under another car, injuring 16 - 20 people.

The Archduke decided to change his route to visit the injured people at the hospital. The driver wasn't informed of the change of route and took a wrong turn. He was told to reverse the car.

The car slowed down to reverse right in front of Gavrilo Princip. Princip walked up to the car and fired his pistol twice, hitting the Archduke and his wife. Both died shortly after, and Princip was arrested immediately.
